Life used to make much more sense.
Or should I say cents?
Remember when college Football Bowls used to be called such things as the CHERRY BOWL…the FIESTA BOWL…the ORANGE BOWL?
Ahhh, those were the good ol’ days. A golden-age when all the major Bowl games were showcased in one single, glorious day of post new-year’s-eve-hangover-football madness.
It was brilliant TV! Get up early … watch the early warm-up games…wet your appetite with some juicier games and then watch the prime time games as the day wound down.
Yes, those were the days before the college corporate take-over.
Those were the days when colleges actually put forth the effort to at least hide the fact that College Football was/is a business…that it in fact is not about the students or the players, but like most of this free country– about money.
Those golden days seem like a distant memory today.
I’m not complaining — I know it’s just a part of life. I’m just confused!
You see, when Bowls were called cool names like the Peach Bowl and the Rose Bowl, I knew exactly what they were…and how the schools came to qualify.
And though I didn’t particularly like it, I even understood when Corporations wanted greater bang for their buck and bowls became known as [fill in corporate name here] Holiday Bowl and the [Nokia....err... I mean the Allstate] Sugar Bowl.
BUT NOW…
The names of the Bowls are rapidly dropping.
Now they are just names like the CAPITAL ONE BOWL, the CHICK-FIL-A BOWL, the CHAMPS SPORTS BOWL, and the INSIGHT BOWL.
Let me reiterate — they’re not called the Capital One LIBERTY Bowl. Not the Outback STEAK bowl. Not the Champs Sports-STRAP Bowl. No, they have dropped the original Bowl Surname for their corporate name.
I’ll be honest, I don’t even know what these Bowls are anymore! What did they take over? Did the Champs Sports Bowl conquer the FREEDOM Bowl? Did the KELLOGS CRUNCHY NIBLETS BOWL take over the FORD MOTOR OIL ALL OVER THE DRIVEWAY BOWL?
They even have website Bowls. See: Papajohns.com Bowl. I’m not joking.
If a team makes the Capital One Bowl…is that good? Is this considered a worthy accomplishment? I have no idea! I don’t have any idea what this game used to be called?
Back in the day, I knew that the big games were the Rose, Cotton and Orange…and later on the Fiesta and Sugar Bowls. Today, I have no idea.
And SPEAKING OF HAVING NO IDEA…
Give it up for the BCS once again.
They won’t get this right. No matter who they choose, at least one, if not two, worthy teams will NOT get a chance…will feel cheated …and ultimately feel the decision was unfair.
And rightly so!
Should Ohio State match-up against USC? Michigan? Florida? All of these schools can make good arguments…but two of them will be devastated.
AND after the BCS Championship, there will likely still be an unresolved National Championship debate (unless of course the sole undefeated team, Ohio State, wins).
Why do they do this? It’s a ridiculous system. The current format stinks! They NEED to go to a playoff system.
And below is an easy way to incorporate a partial one without losing the value of the already existing Bowls … and even get one more BIG payday for the Networks and Sponsors (that’s what I call a bargain).
Okay here’s the easy plan: Keep the BCS system intact the way it is except have the computer pick the top 4 teams (instead of the top 2). Have 1 play 4 in one of the BCS Bowls and 2 play 3 in another. The winners would play for THE College Championship a week or two later.
Aka under this improved scenario, this year would unfold like this:
Ohio State (1) vs Florida (4)
USC (2) vs Michigan (3)
Winners square off in the mother of all games… called the ADAM BOWL (of course), rightfully named after it’s Creator…err… Promotional Blogger.
Yes, there will still be SOME debate and arguments about who the top four are under this new set-up…but that’s a lot better than the current top “two” argument (where very worthy teams get left off). This year. for example, there would be no argument over who gets in…because there are no other worthy National Championship candidates.
This proposed system would generate a LOT more money!
You would now have a mini-playoff to satisfy most of the free world…
You’d have the Bowls more or less in the same state as they currently are (satisfying the Colleges, and Corporate Sponsors…and somewhat appealing to the Traditionalists by not butchering the Bowl system any further.) …
AND you’d also have interest in the two real BCS Bowl games AND an extra BIG PAYOUT in the real championship game.
How can they not do this?
Yes, this system has some flaws, but the Bowl system has always been flawed–but this is a step in the right direction…and most importantly, it’s what the public wants!
So what is College Football waiting for?????????
EXTRA THOUGHTS:
- For at least one more Sunday, it was USC versus Texas revisited…as Vince Young led the Longhorns from behind in the closing moments to knock off the heavily favored Trojans…err…I mean N.Y. Giants.
Okay, the Trojans’ collapse wasn’t anywhere as extreme as what the G-men just allowed, but you get the point.
- The Ravens officially knocked the Pittsbugh Steelmen out of the playoffs yesterday. Okay not officially, but you know your playoff hopes are gone when you are sacked more times than you score. In fact, if Baltimore got one point per sack and the Steelers got to keep the normal football scoring system…the game still wasn’t close:
Final Score: Ravens 9 Steelers 0
Suddenly the Ravens are looking scary. Still don’t think they can be the cream atop the AFC milk come playoff time…but they are raising some hairs.
- Last week, I picked Jacksonville to edge Kansas City as the AFC’s final playoff team. Can I take that back?
The Chiefs are clicking and red hot after a big win over Denver. The Jags, on the other hand, are 1-4 on the road and can’t beat the teams they are supposed to beat. Hmmm….sounds like the Padres in the playoffs this year (Well, if you substitute “road” loses with “home” loses. And if you switch “football” with baseball”. Okay, okay, I’m stretching things here…but I’m just venting) .
Switching gears…
- It’s official, the ATLANTIC DIVISION is the worst division in the history of the NBA…no in all of professional sports! 5 teams with losing records. The first place team has a winning percentage of .385 . Let me repeat that: The first place team has a winning percentage of .385. Embarrassing!
Tell you what, I’m so confident that this division stinks that if one of these teams wins the Title this June, I’ll let you buy me a drink. Aren’t I generous?
Heck, if the Knicks win it, I’ll buy you a freakin’ bridge!
- Philip Rivers finally had a bad game –proving he is indeed human. Yet the Chargers still win. Thank you LT! Thank you second-half Charger-D! Thank you schedule-makers for scheduling the Raiders during this particular weekend!
Here is my very brief synopsis of the Chargers following the Raider game:
- The Defense stepped it up this week. They weren’t great. They weren’t dominant. They missed waaay too many tackles. They could have had about 35 more sacks than they did. At times, they even got outplayed on the line by a weak Oakland o-line…but they came up with some HUGE turnovers, held the Raiders scoreless at the end of the game, and with the exception of one scoring drive, substantially outplayed the Raiders in the fourth quarter. Exactly what last year’s team couldn’t do.
- I was very impressed by the five sacks the defense put up, especially considering so many starters were out.
- The O-line got dominated at times. But in the end, played well enough…and considering, the injury to Kris Dielman, I’ll give them a break.
- Finally, the Chargers got Antonio Gates involved! YEAH!!!
- Randall Godfrey played phenomenally! Maybe his best game as a Charger!
- Rivers didn’t posses the normal poise in the pocket that we have become accustomed to. He had jumpy feet. It reminded me of the first half against the Chiefs. But hey, everyone is allowed a bad game….especially if your team still wins
- The three biggest plays of the game were: a) Antonio Cromartie’s 91 kickoff return that set up LT’s first touchdown run. b) Quentin Jammers pick (without that, not sure we’re headed to Buffalo 9-2) and c) LT’s 44 yard first down run that set up San Diego’s final score (that was the dagger that did the Silver and Black in).
- The Chargers didn’t play their best ball of the year, but considering they played without: Shawne Merriman, Luis Castillo, Marlon McCree, Keenan McCardell, Michael Turner and Dielman…I’ll take it! In fact, its actually slightly impressive.
- Vincent Jackson made the ESPN highlight reel, but not for the reason he was hoping for. Vincent, next time you want to celebrate, run out of bounds first
Or! Maybe don’t celebrate until the game…errr…play is over!
